Most shower problems are small and predictable. Here are the ones hosts make most, and how to avoid each one.
Almost every one of these comes down to time or helpers, not money.
If your shower is noon to 2, booking noon to 2 means decorating while guests arrive. Book about 45 minutes before and 30 minutes after. It is the cheapest fix there is, and it means hosts get to greet guests instead of hanging garland.
Hungry guests watching gifts for 45 minutes is the classic long shower. Serve food first, then open gifts while people eat dessert. Guests stay happier and the afternoon feels shorter.
One or two activities is enough. Three games in a row turns a party into a schedule, and guests start checking their phones. If the room is chatting happily, skip the second game.
For a bridal shower, only invite people who are also invited to the wedding. Check with the bride before invitations go out. For baby showers, confirm with the parents whether coworkers or a partner's family are on the list.
Have a way to get gifts home. Bring a few large bags or bins and ask one helper to load the car. Big baby gear does not fit in a sedan with the guest of honor and the leftover cake.
Hosts often spend hundreds on backdrops and balloon arches for a blank room. In a space with character, a few florals and a sign are enough. Spend the savings on food.
The gift list is only useful if someone keeps it. Snap a photo of the list before you leave and send it to the guest of honor that night. Thank you notes are easiest to write within about 2 weeks.
Tip: Make it easy. Pre address thank you envelopes during the shower: guests write their own address on an envelope at the door.
The host who tries to cook, decorate, run games and take photos misses the party. Hand out jobs a week ahead, and write each person's job in the group chat so nobody has to guess on the day.
It also helps to plan the end. Showers that fade out slowly leave hosts tired and the space messy. Announce the group photo, say a short thank you, and let guests know the party is wrapping up. A clear ending feels generous, not rushed, and it gives your pack up crew the full 30 minutes they need to get everything into the cars on time. Guests will thank you for knowing when to head home.
Another quiet mistake is not planning for weather. A San Antonio summer afternoon can sit near 100 degrees, so any outdoor games or a yard dessert table need shade, ice and a backup plan indoors. In spring, check the forecast for rain a few days out and decide early where everything moves if it pours.
Finally, do not forget the guest of honor's comfort, especially at a baby shower. A supportive chair, water within reach, a short gift opening and a clear end time matter more to an expecting parent than any centerpiece.
Tip: Do a one page plan. Put the run of show, helper jobs, vendor phone numbers and the address on a single page. Share it with every host and helper the day before.
None of these need more money to fix, just a short plan and a few helpers with clear jobs. When you are ready to see a space, you can request a tour.
